Romain's personal page

Short bio

Romain graduated at Ecole polytechnique in 2006 and obtained a quantum physics master degree at ENS in 2007. He then joined the group of Luca Guidoni at Laboratoire Matériaux et Phénomènes Quantiques for his PhD, working on miniaturized ion traps for quantum information experiments. After obtaining his PhD in 2010 he joined the group of Hélène Perrin at Laboratoire de physique des lasers as a post-doc where he learned how to produce Bose-Einstein condensates. He obtained later an associate professor position in the same group to study out-of-equilibrium superfluids. He defended his habilitation thesis in 2023 presenting his contributions to the understanding of low-dimensional superfluids. In 2024 he obtained a full professor position at laboratoire de physique des interactions ioniques et moléculaires where he will start a new line of research on the physics of ultracold neutral plasmas.

Research interests

Romain is interested in the study of non-linear physics phenomena, such as the propagation of solitary waves, shocks or the emergence of collective phenomena. In particular, he has studied the physics of rotating superfluids, described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and realized in the laboratory by a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a bubble-shaped trap. He is currently building a new experiment to study the dynamics of ions, atoms and electrons in an ultra-cold neutral Calcium plasma. More generally he is interested in the use of atom-light interaction to control atomic gases at the microscopic scale realizing in the laboratory a analogue quantum simulator for larger systems.
